Ok… this is another one of those “how would you react” posts.

I work in security and sometimes you can find yourself in sticky situations. Take today for example.

I was visting with one of my customers and she was explaining that they’d been having trouble setting the alarm at night. I asked what the issue was, and she then told me that she was getting a fault on a number that I recognized as one we typically designate for wireless components. I inquired as to whether she knew of any wireless components in her facility.

“I have this panic button down here.” she said, pointing under the counter at an object I could not see from the other side of the glass. I thought nothing of it and continued my inspection to see if I could pinpoint the offending piece of equipment.  A couple minutes pass, then the phone rings…

“Yes, he’s here right now.” I hear from the other side of the glass. “Sir, your company is on the phone. They said they recieved a signal and YOU need to call and have it canceled.” I ask, “Have the authorities already been dispatched?”

“Yes.”

There’s that sinking feeling again. Wait a minute! I haven’t done anything to send any signals.

I jump on my cell phone and race through the numbers to see if I can cancel the dispatch before the police arrive. I asked “What signal did you recieve?” The response?

“We recieved a signal from a panic button.”

Unbelievable. Even more unbelievable is the fact that, the one time you don’t need a quick response is the one time the police show up in 2 minutes.

After a long, embarrassing explanation to the police about how the lady accidentally hit the panic while trying to show it to me, I put the system on test for half an hour so as to avoid any more incidents.

Still… I must admit that there was that moment that my heart stopped with that fleeting thought of, “are they going to come in guns blazing? Will they arrest me? Charge us for a false alarm? What will my boss say?”

Just thought this might amuse some of you.

Be Blessed!
